A bright clear ruby in the glass deceives you into thinking this is a light and delicate wine. Our very cool climate vineyards impart a deep savoury tone to our Pinot Noir which delivers in spades in this vintage. Fresh raspberry and strawberry fruits in a marshmallow like implied sweetness set the stage before the deep savoury notes of forest floor and pine mushrooms come through for the lingering finish.
Brian Anderson, and his son Ben, purchased 32 acres of land in Lenswood, Adelaide Hills in 1994 and developed it into a vineyard. The family focuses on producing high quality wine grapes and premium wines. Since Brian’s passing, Ben and his wife Clare have continued to run the family business.
Ben spends the majority of his time in the vineyard looking after our vines and making sure the grapes are growing well. If you can’t find him in amongst the vines, there’s a good chance he is working with our winemaker in the winery, meeting with our business partners locally or overseas or just hiding somewhere with a glass of our award-winning Pinot Noir!
Clare is the artist in the family. As a previous art school student, she loves gardening, pottery, and drawing things that inspire her. She is the one who draws our beloved A Series labels every vintage. Most of the time, you will meet her when you come to our cellar door for some wine tasting or a relaxing lunch as she also runs our cellar door restaurant. Clare is the best person to talk with if you want to know about things like the local flowers and birds, the best photo spots around Fox Creek trail and where to go in the Adelaide Hills to find great local produce.

The 2017 Pinot is reminiscent of the 2009 and the 2011 Pinot. A very big wine, it is a product of the vintage, with a long slow ripening. The nose shows rich, dark fruit with some cigar box and sous bois character.
On tasting you immediately sense the mouth filling texture with that ethereal pinot fruit that goes on and on. This wine just doesn’t go away.
About
Former Abalone diver and Lobster fisherman Brian Franklin planted Apsley Gorge with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the early 1990’s. Situated in the Apsley Valley about 14 kilometres from the township of Bicheno, Tasmania, the vineyard enjoys an excellent climate for both these grape varieties. The first vintage was produced in 1993.
The vineyard, about 7 hectares, is farmed as low yield and non-irrigated to ensure the stability of the fruit, hand pruned and hand picked maintains the quality of the grapes from vineyard to winery.
Brian took over the winemaking in the late 1990’s and quickly became noticed as an exceptional winemaker. His winemaking skills in the traditional French style were honed originally with Phillipe Charlopin, one of Burgundy’s most notable winemakers. Brian has worked every vintage in Burgundy since 2000, lately working with Phillipe’s son Yann at Domain Charlopin-Tissier.
Apsley Gorge wine is distributed to every state in Australia and exported to several counties. The winery sits on the seaside at “The Gulch” in Bicheno, one of the most spectacular positions of any winery in Australia. Originally a fish processing factory, the classic character of the winery suits the history of Tasmania’s east coast. Fishing and agriculture are still major industries in the district with wine production and wine tourism becoming extremely popular.

Red fruit aromas with dried orange zest, damp earth, cedar and notes of subtle, spicy oak. On the palate it is plush and smooth with fresh, balanced acidity, fine-grained tannins and a long finish. A complex wine that will improve with cellaring.
Established in 1998, Bellvale Wine is a family-owned business run by principal winemaker and viticulturalist, John Ellis. Situated in the lush Tarwin River valley of South Gippsland, the area is acknowledged as one of Australia’s best Pinot-Noir producing regions. This is reflected in Bellvale’s numerous international and national awards over the last 22 years.
The name, Bellvale, is derived from the Ellis family’s rich agricultural heritage, which may be traced back to a farm in Nieuw Amsterdam (the New York area), in the late 1600s. The Bellvale label features two majestic oak trees that grace the centre of its vineyard.
John Ellis spent many years on Long Island, in south-east New York, before emigrating to Australia in the 1980s. His abiding passion for fine wine and viticulture stem from extensive free time spent in Europe during a 25-year career as a commercial pilot. To maintain his interest, John followed several agricultural paths during that time, including planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to supply the first vineyard in the Hamptons in the 1970s. Over time came many trips to Burgundy to hone his knowledge of traditional French winemaking methods and traditional viticulture.
Exposure to Australian wines sparked an interest in terroir down under. What followed was a lengthy period of research and the selection of South Gippsland’s cool climate. John now produces wines that are acknowledged as some of the regions finest – said to be in keeping with the premium producers of the Burgundy region.

This is a stunning pinot of a complex, bunchy style, already drinking well, with more held in reserve.

Byrne Farm Pinot Noir 2019
2019 was the inaugural vintage for Byrne Farm wines in the cool climate region of Orange with the fruit being grown at approximately 900 m above sea level. This wine shows bright dark cherry, raspberry fruits with subtle spice and whole bunch perfume. Our Pinot Noir is fresh and crunchy with a delicate palette but a powerful fruit finish.
Our farm is located in Nashdale, a 10 minute drive out of Orange. A 40 acre, special parcel of land located on the Northern Slope of Mt Canobolas, an extinct volcano with the most beautiful chocolate/red ferrosol soils at 900m altitude, perfect for growing Pinot and Chardonnay. The historic property name of Byrne Farm is “Glenidle“ which operated as an apple and cherry orchard from the early 1900’s. Interestingly, it was also once the site of one of the regions oldest muscat vineyards. We are fortunate to maintain small orchards of Cherries, Figs, Peaches and Apples which delight us and our visitors throughout the year.
In 1995, Jeff Byrne a Canadian from Nova Scotia made the decision to take a year off school and travel to the Gold Coast, Australia with some buddies. One evening Jeff and his mates were leaving Broadbeach for Surfers Paradise and shared a maxi taxi with a group of girls, an important time in history for Byrne Farm as one of the girls, Bridgette is now Jeff’s wife! After getting married in 2000, Jeff & Bridgette made the move to the Hunter Valley where Jeff started his career in winemaking, working for the newly built Tower Estate owned by a consortium led by the wine legend Len Evans. During his 8 years at Tower, Jeff completed his Wine Science degree at Charles Sturt university in Wagga Wagga and with Bridgette had three daughters Caitlin, Lauren and Bree. In 2008 Jeff joined the Agnew Wines family where he became the Chief Winemaker overseeing the production of Audrey Wilkinson, Poole’s Rock and Cockfighert’s Ghost wines for 11 years. Over this time, Jeff had the opportunity to do two Vintages in Burgundy, both at Domaine D’Eugenie, which solidified his love affair with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He was a scholar at the 2009 Len Evans Tutorial and has become a leading judge in the Australian wine show system, currently the Chair of the NSW Small Winemakers Show.
In 2019 Jeff and Bridgette made the decision to make a ’tree-change’ leaving their Newcastle beach suburb of Stockton for Orange NSW, a cool climate area Jeff had long admired after many years of purchasing fruit and making wines from the region and which also has a strong resemblance to Nova Scotia.

Clarence House was built in 1830 on land which was originally the market garden for the City of Hobart. Present owner David Kilpatrick first planted vines on the north-east slopes of the property in 1998. Located in the foothills of the Meehand Ranges, halfway between Hobart and the Coal Valley, Clarence House Estate sits in a unique location atop Jurassic dolerite and basalt soils with low annual rainfall.
The majority of the fruit was destemmed for wild fermentation with a small portion of whole bunches for perfume and structure. Aged in a combination of new and old French oak barriques and puncheons, with a selection to determine the most structural and pristine barrels for the reserve bottling.
A pinot typified by perfume, spice, nuanced tannin and freshness. Medium bodied, with concentration of fruit tempered by fine structure. Elegant and ethereal. Enjoy with game meats and decanting is recommended.

Blended from a range of clones and soil types from vineyards in the Moorabool Valley, this wine reflects the diverse complexity of our site’s varying aspects and soils.
Fruit for this wine is sourced from 3 vineyards over seven clones planted between 1988 to 2000. Various ferments with different percentages of whole bunch are aged in French oak and then blended to give a final 15% new oak and 20% whole bunch.
Bright cerise red colour, fresh berries and lifted floral perfumes lead to a palate that is vibrant and youthful, abundant with juicy red primary fruits and finely crafted tannins, all beckoning for immediate enjoyment.
Clyde Park Vineyard was established in 1979 when the varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were planted on the property.
Further plantings since have increased the vineyard to 35 acres, expanding the original Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and adding Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. In all we have 7 clones of Pinot Noir, 6 clones of Chardonnay, 2 clones of Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc and a sole clone of Pinot Gris.
The site consists of undulating north easterly slopes. The soil varies from silt/clay to sandy loam with basalt over a limestone base. Plantings on our north easterly slope provide exposure to sunlight, whilst the river flat area offers warmth and wind protection. Viticulturally the site produces premium fruit of low yields providing balanced wines of great purity, complexity and finesse.
We have owned Clyde Park since 1996 and have concentrated on developing premium quality cool climate wines, which today are sold across Australia and recently we have begun to export.
We are proud to be a James Halliday 5 star rated vineyard for a number of years, and our wines have won numerous awards.
