About the Wine
A flagship red wine from Hans Herzog in Marlborough, made from equal parts Merlot, Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon, and already approaching six years of maturation.
Spicy, herbal, chocolatey, and with age is coming a mellow softness. It’s a wine in a lovely place, from a…. lovely place.
The grapes enjoyed a long maceration time and progressed into a natural wild fermentation. Matured in new and old French oak for 30 months.
About Hans Herzog
With over 500 years of winemaking history in his family, Swiss winemaker Hans Herzog picked up his life in Zurich wine country, and with his wife Therese, headed for New Zealand. In 1994, they established one of the most stunning vineyards in the heart of the Marlborough region, planting an astonishing 29 varieties on their small patch of land.
They tend the vineyard with immense love and care. Everything is grown organically. Hans crafts premium, idiosyncratic wines that show the beauty of his vineyard in every glass and shares these wines with every person who comes to dine at their fine estate.
As The Wine Front’s Gary Walsh once noted, there’s “Never a dull moment when you open a wine from Hans Herzog.”

GARY WALSH – WINE FRONT AUSTRALIA ON OCT 19, 2017
Tasted about twenty something Martinborough Pinot Noir, in-situ, last week which was a pleasant enough task. This wine was first in the lineup and impressed me straight away. Vineyard planted in 1986 on its own roots, and I believe, perhaps unusually for Martinborough, has a high percentage of clay in the vineyard.

Lunar Blue Rock Syrah 2016 New Zealand MartinboroughLunar Blue Rock Syrah 2016 – Shiraz made with Pinot sensibilities. An under-rated grape from New Zealand which does amazing things in the right sites and hands. As with both Pinots, this sees 30% new oak, for 12 months.
Comparisons to Northern Rhône are inevitable – no bad thing. Built over tightly knitted tannins, this is a savoury wine of grace and power, launching with earth, pepper, charcuterie/smoked meats, topped by blackberry and black fruits and florals. Amazing length runs through the finish, this is a concentrated style with its fine tannins and a rocky mineral element rounding out this detailed wine. Simply, a gorgeous cool climate Syrah.

Upon release it is deep ruby in colour. The nose is brimming with vibrant red fruit including plum, raspberry and cherry. There are also hints of spice, vanilla and chocolate, with some underlying savoury notes. The wine is mouth-filling, yet balanced with plush velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a prolonged finish.
