The New Zealand climate is ideally suited for the production of malt whisky. New Zealand contains some of the best barley in the world, remarkable water sourced from ancient mountains and we’re surrounded by a cultural heritage that encourages questioning of long-standing conventional thinking. 1919 Micro-Batch release showcases the terroir of New Zealand whisky.
Kirikiriroa release is a reflection of New Zealand’s soil, climate and geographical location at the bottom of the world. Along with the influences and profiles created by our custom made still. It’s a unique balanced expression of grains and red wine cask.

ABOUT 1919 DISTILLING
WE’RE A HANDCRAFTED GIN & WHISKY DISTILLERY BASED IN AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND.
We incorporate New Zealand’s finest ingredients with kiwi ingenuity to produce innovative, first-rate spirits that people can get excited about.
We’re driven by a mission to bring more transparency and integrity to the spirits industry. We choose not to compromise on the quality of ingredients and connection to the distilling craft for the sake of scalability.
INGREDIENTS
We choose to use the best ingredients available, rather than cut corners; lemons and oranges grown in New Zealand, hand picked cherries from Otago and sustainably sourced honey. Our goal is to not only use the best ingredients, but to help grow New Zealand business along the way.
DISTILLING PROCESS
Our ethanol is made from sugar cane the same way they did it in the 1900’s. This is unique in New Zealand. It’s cheeper and easier to use the alternative, whey ethanol, (made from milk), which is used by most brands. We believe in using the best to make the best, rather than taking short cuts that compromise the quality of our product.
Our still is New Zealand made and custom built for our Distillery. By choosing to get our still made locally we where able to insure the absolute best quality and craftsmanship, while supporting the grass roots distilling industry in New Zealand.
PROUDLY NZ MADE
We are proud to be New Zealand made and walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Next time you are in your local liquor store look for the words “New Zealand made” on the bottle and not just “New Zealand”. You will likely be surprised by the amount of gins that claim to be New Zealand gins, but are not made here and do not have a physical distillery to call home.
We are proud to have built our very own distillery, here in New Zealand, from the ground up in. We have kept the craft at the heart of what we do, which allows us to push the boundaries and create award-winning, innovative spirits.

Here is something for the peat lovers! This smoky release was aged only on Sherry Oloroso barrels. The scent, the ethereal, the ever-piercing aroma of peat and phenols. The fog of war, the fumes of old. A bold identity boasting peated character, tart finish.

Sometimes love is found in the strangest of places. The chance meeting of a one-eyed muscle bound sailor with waif of a girl the shape of a toothpick sparked a truly unique relationship. Popeye and Olive were two peated whisky barrels filled on the same day – and named after these two cartoon characters. There is never any guarantee the whisky from barrels named after couples will end up in the same bottle. Sometimes though, there is that certain magic and the whisky from Popeye and Olive certainly had this for us. And as Celine Dion so aptly puts it, if you are truly in love you’re not in love, you’re in “lurve”.
Tasting Notes: 52% alc/vol, available in 700ml bottles only and limited to 300 hand-numbered bottles. Deep auburn in colour, this exquisitely peated whisky remains true to the Fleurieu style. Hints of gentle smoke and sweet iodine peat on the nose give way to briny coastal infused malt and umami on the palate. The balance between sweet smoky toffee and wisps of toasted walnuts mingle well with overtones of dried stone fruit. A great dram to deliberate over, after exploring rock pools at Middleton point at low tide on a hazy Winter afternoon. Gold Medal – Craft Spirit – American Distilling Institute Awards 2020

It could possibly be described as part way between a Tokay and a Sauternes in character.
