Made in a pure-fruited, medium bodied style that takes its inspiration from Burgundy rather than northern Italy or Alsace, this finely weighted Gris is drawn from a south-facing site in Merricks. The fruit was hand sorted in the vineyard and winery, then whole bunch pressed into to old barriques to ferment using indigenous yeasts. The wine only goes through partial malolactic, to preserve freshness and was matured on its lees in old neutral barrel for 6 months.
No fan of the nondescript, structure-free Gris style that abounds, Barney’s versions are well-defined and refreshing examples. Apple-tangy and creamy in the mouth, its charismatic flavours fall between the spiced apple/pear and stone fruit spectrum and the wine finishes with rippling citrus-laden dryness and notes of nutmeg and honey. Quality.

Another year of work in the vineyard steering our Pinot Gris towards harvest has seen further progress in our style towards true “gris” weight, texture and complexity. Select parcels were fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to retain fragrance and flavour. Following fermentation, approximately 50% of the wine was transferred to neutral French oak for a short time to subtly build savoury and textural complexity.
The distinctive ripe spiced pear characters of the variety dominate with honeysuckle and hints of citrus. The palate texture is rich through the middle, then balanced by a crisp, clean acid finish.
Viticulture
Our Gris grape site is on a north-western slope attracting maximum afternoon sun. The vines were cane pruned to ensure an even range of shoots & training VSP.
Vinification
Grapes were destemmed only, no crushing. The fruit soaked in press for 20 hours before a gentle cremant cycle released juice from the grapes. The now plush pink juice was briefly cold settled in tank. The coarsely settled juice was then racked into tank & barrel for spontaneous fermentation. Upon fermenting to sugar dryness, the wines were fined & clarified. The oak & tank batches were blended & left in tank to allow integration & equilibrium of the final wine.
Winemaking at Jones Road starts in the vineyard. Careful management of yields and hand picking ensure the grapes reach the winery in premium condition.Vineyard owner, Rob Frewer and son Matthew, vineyard manager have nurtured the vines since planting and always take a hands-on approach throughout the year especially at vintage when timing is critical for optimum baume, pH and acid levels. Wines are made at Sticks Winery in nearby Yarra Valley by winemaker Travis Bush. Here they are given special traditional treatment whilst using the best handling methods combined with the latest technology. The wines are matured in the finest quality new French Oak for at least ten months before being bottled and laid to rest until the flavours develop.

With a faint bronze hue, the 2019 Beurrot Pinot Gris has an expressive nose of pear, quince, fresh hay and almonds. It combines a textured mid-palate with a fine phenolic edge that delivers flavours of red and green apples. The wine closes with orange citrus pith and a rosewater accented finish.
The Kooyong vineyard and winery, established in 1996, was acquired by the Gjergja family in 2004. Kooyong is located in Tuerong, towards the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula. The majority of the forty hectare site is planted to Pinot Noir, with a substantial area of Chardonnay and several small sections of Pinot Gris.
All Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate wines are entirely domain grown, vinified and bottled. The wines in the Quartier stable are produced from estate grown fruit and fruit from neighbouring vineyards.
The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.

Hand picked and whole bunch pressed, 20% barrel fermented. A fragrant nose of Nashi pear and spice leads to a richly structured palate of delicious orchard fruit, cinnamon and nutmeg, with fine acidity and elegant length. Enjoy with Asian and spicy dishes.
Lobethal Road stands alone in the north-east corner of the Adelaide Hills wine region between the heritage villages of Lobethal and Mount Torrens.
The vineyard, at 475m above sea level, was first planted in 1998 and now generously provides esteemed, multi-award-winning Hills fruits such as Chardonnay and Shiraz as well as contemporary styles such as Tempranillo, Graciano and the first plantings in the region of the revered French Rhone Valley white grape, Roussanne. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris come from their Woodside vineyard, with additional fruit being sourced from neighbouring Hills’ sites.
Lobethal Road’s vineyards are nurtured with modern, environmentally sustainable practices, and minimal intervention and inputs throughout the entire winemaking journey aimed at highlighting the ultimate expression of the unique location, the Hills’ cool climate, and the classic grape varieties that thrive in the region.
The entire site of the Mount Torrens vineyard and cellar door operates off the grid, supplying its own water as well as generating all its power by solar energy. Production ‘miles’ are minimal with their winemaking carried out just a kilometre down the road.
Lobethal Road’s wines have been regularly awarded top accolades in capital city and regional wine shows, by leading Australian critics, and selected for prestigious wines lists both domestically and internationally.

The 2021 Clementine Pinot Gris is a lovely sunset orange in colour. It has bright and rich aromas of red apple, wild strawberry, florals (honeysuckle & rose) and spice (cinnamon, ginger & fennel seed) with stone fruit (peach & yellow plum). The palate has a little tang along with a silky texture and velvety tannins offering structure and length.
Clementine is a truly orange wine. Grown in the cold-climate of Orange, NSW, the orange colour is a result of fermenting the pinot gris on its own skins, providing the stunning colour, delicious texture and crunchy tang. And this orange wine is very Clementine, which is not only a delicious mandarin-like fruit (between a Mediterranean citrus and a sweet orange) but the name of the winemaker’s little girl who is also a wonderful mix of sweetness and spice and all things nice.

About Ocean Eight
The winery is located at 271 Tucks Road in Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula. All grapes picked for this small production come from the Aylward’s 17 Hectares of vines. The Mornington Peninsula has become one of the most sought-after regions in Australia for the production of high quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. These are the varieties planted at Ocean Eight’s vineyards. The winery is managed by Michael & Hollie Aylward whose passion originated over a decade ago with a part-time job at the family’s previous winery Kooyong. Ocean Eight has evolved into the couple’s full-time obsession. Whilst the first crops ripened on the vine, to further cultivate their viticultural experience, the Aylward’s embarked on several tours of the renowned vineyards and cellars of the Burgundy region in France. These trips played an important factor in the style of wines now produced at Ocean Eight. This passion-driven endeavour to bring the highest quality wine to the Mornington Peninsula saw Michael win the sought-after Australian “Young Gun of Wine” award in 2011.
When defining what identifies the Ocean Eight wines, Mike Aylward always returns to two ideas he has worked on since the first release wine; how well are they going to match with food and will they best represent the climate and grape growing conditions of the Mornington Peninsula. Therefore the Ocean Eight wines are lean, bright & tight with acid at the finish. These characters help the wines pair with food and age incredibly well. It is no coincidence that these characters are also intrinsic to the cool, maritime conditions of Mornington Peninsula vineyards, where the Aylward’s chose to grow grapes and make wines over 20 years ago.

Perfumed aromas of blossom, jasmine, candy apple, and wet stone emanate with subtle hints of beeswax, nashi pear and green apple following through on the palate. Concentrated acid, persistent length, and a lean profile.
Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when the late Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their 16-hectare farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania.
Today, after more than 20 years of producing premium quality cool-climate wines, and having been awarded numerous trophies and medals at prestigious wine shows, the Pooley family has established a second vineyard in the Coal River Valley at Richmond. Margaret Pooley remained the chief executive of Cooinda Vale Vineyard until well into her nineties. She was a hardy Scot and could be found tending vines during the coldest Tasmanian winters
