Pure and lively, this wine has been made to age around a decade. Elegant, aromatic bouquet with citrus, pineapple, white stone fruits on the palate.
Domaine Deiss’s wines are without doubt among the most exciting of the region. The domaine has long focused on field blends so as to produce wines which reflect the terroir on which they are grown more than the individual grape variety, and in doing so Deiss has forced changes on a region which was known only for varietal wines thirty years ago. For many years this consisted mostly of the ‘Alsace’ blend at the entry level, and then a series of wines from specific sites which Jean-Michel called his ‘level of Premier Cru’ wines.
Now, having expanded the vineyard area, they have introduced a series of ‘village-level’ wines which are produced in the same way – from sites with several varieties planted together which are picked and vinified together too. All of these are immensely impressive and worth experimenting with – they each have a definite and unique character, and are some of the most fascinating white wines in the world. Of course we have favourites, and ours are probably Zellenberg at the village level, and Engelgarten at the level of premier cru – but like Burgundy, the complexity is best embraced rather than trying to simplify – all these wines are worth trying, to find your own favourites and to understand the bigger picture: start here!
Deiss may be a contrary character himself, not always in tune with other producers in the area, but the quality in the wines really does speak for what he has achieved.
The wines from the original vineyards are all certified organic and biodynamic, but as the domaine has recently expanded from 27 hectares to 40, some of the new vineyards have not yet achieved certification. All the wines are suitable for vegetarians, but they are not certified for that.

A fusion between Pinot Blanc and Pinot Auxerrois. Aromas of toasted brioche. Beautiful dry, opulent wine with a generous and balanced structure. Perfect for lovers of great dry white wine.
It is at the foot of the fortified church of Hunawihr, that since 1963, the Mittnacht family has been producing wines of high expression. Today, it is Marc Mittnacht, son of André, his wife Paule and his son Pierre who work the 11 hectares of vines spread over the best terroirs of Hunawihr and Ribeauvillé. For more than 20 years now, the vineyard has been conducted in Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture.
The diversity of the plots that make up our vineyard, the geology of our soils and our environment, but above all our desire to live our profession as naturally as possible, are all aspects that have led us to engage in organic and then certified biodynamic agriculture since 1999. Our desire not to use weedkillers, fertilizers and chemical insecticides but to let the flora and fauna present in our vines grow, to compose our own compost or to develop our biodynamic preparations specific to the needs of the plant has a triple purpose: to guarantee a healthy product, to give the vine the means to defend itself naturally and to preserve our terroirs to safeguard the originality of our Protected Designation of Origin.

Floral nose with tropical fruit and spice. Complex, elegant and enticing. Focused and taut palate, lively with crisp acidity. Citrus, white flower notes with a flinty minerality and bright acid framework. The dry style facilitates a mouthwatering, lifted finish.
Jean-Louis Trapet of the famous Gevrey-Chambertin domain found his counterpart in his wife, Alsatian native Andree. Another bold winemaker who inherited her family’s vines in the villages of Beblenheim and Riquewihr, Andree with her husband and children take best advantage of their native terroirs with their trailblazing natural viticulture and biodynamic farming. As in Burgundy, their Alsace vineyards are 100% Demeter certified. Trapet’s holdings include some of the top Grand Crus such as Schlossberg, Sporen, Sonnenglanz and Schoenenbourg. They work with multiple varieties including Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois and Pinot Noir. Andree’s style tends to favor dryer wines with the emphasis on fruit purity, finesse and elegance, to accentuate their excellent terroirs.

This wine also contains almost 10% de-classified Grand Cru fruit from vines around 30 years old in the great Rosacker vineyard. The wine is a blend of several sites of mostly limestone based soil. 2019 has produced a fine dry Riesling with texture and depth. Intense floral and citrus aromas with mineral backing and wonderful acid backbone.
The Mader domaine is a very small quantity, high quality wine producer based in the picture postcard village of Hunawihr just south of Ribeauville. The family own just over 10 hectares of vineyards, including prized holdings of vines in the famous ‘Rosacker’ Grand Cru vineyard and also now in the Grand cru Schlossberg. All vineyard work is carried out by hand and since 2005 their son Jerome is now running the estate having studied and gained a Diploma in Oenology. Since returning to the family estate Jerome has also converted all their vineyards to organic viticulture.
Rieslings here are some of the few in Alsace produced in a classic fine dry style built to age. In exceptional years a tiny volume of late harvest ‘Vendanges Tardive’ Riesling is made in a similar fine, elegant style that ages superbly. Jerome is fanatical about quality so yields are kept very low and selections for all wines are extremely strict ensuring the highest quality in every bottle. The entire range of wines from the Mader family taste true to their grape varieties and vineyard origins and all represent fantastic value.

A rather earthy nose leads onto the fresh, slender and balanced palate. The body has a kind of rustic simplicity, with honest, clean red-cherry fruit. This is easy and fresh and would be ideal for a country-style lunch. Drink soon. ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Great acid line in this Alsacion reislig. Medium bodied and packed full of citrus.
The estate, made up of a ten-hectare vineyard, is located in Soultzmatt, in the heart of the Noble Valley (20 km south of Colmar). Viticulture has been a family tradition since 1620. The last three generations of winegrowers, passionate about the production of dry white wines, have succeeded one another: Camille, Paul, Philippe. Camille has contributed to the reputation of the estate since 1947. Author of prestigious vintages, Paul has developed the vineyard to its current size. For fifteen years now, the estate has been led by his son Philippe, after a National Oenology Diploma obtained at the Faculty of Bordeaux, he worked in particular in Burgundy, Bordeaux and New Zealand. Sandrine, his wife joined him in 2014.
