80% Grenache (1964), 20% Mourvèdre (1977) fermented on skins for 5 weeks before ageing in large 50 hl old foudres for 12 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Old vines make up this delicious and elegant blend of dark fruit, black pepper spice, licorice, earthy truffle and minerality. Powerful wine!
Domaine Saint-Damien is run by Joel and Amie Saurel and their son Romain who has now taken charge of the winemaking. The Saurel family had been tending vineyards for four generations, dating back to 1821, and until recently had been selling all of the grapes to negociants. In 1996 Joel resumed producing wine at the estate and in 1998 they brought on consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie. Vinification is classic with wines being fermented in large old cement tanks and aged in either cement tanks or large old foudres for the Gigondas.
Today the estate is comprised of 17 hectares of vineyards of which 12 are in Gigondas. All their vineyards are certified organic since 2012. The vines are an average age of 50 years and are very low yielding. The wines of Gigondas are bottled according to individual terroir (particularly soil type) known as the Saint Damien Trilogy.

The wines that are born in this locality are serious and deep, marked by spices, liquorice notes, and fleshy tannins, which give them extraordinary longevity.
At the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail in 1874: the first buildings. Six generations follow one another at the Domaine Santa Duc and in turn, each one brings their own stone to the building. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault are so many noble grape varieties that the Gras Family is committed to highlighting. Massal selections, biodynamic cultivation, whole harvests, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, bottling without filtration … Plot by plot, Benjamin Gras continues this meticulous work at the head of the estate by putting this history and this know-how at the service of two great terroirs of the southern Rhône Valley: Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas 2018 France1874 . The first buildings. Six generations follow one another at the Domaine Santa Duc and in turn, each one brings their stone to the building on this vineyard of Gigondas known since Gallo-Roman times for its red wines of character. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault are so many noble grape varieties that the Gras Family is committed to highlighting.
1985. Yves Gras takes over from his father Edmond and gives a new international dimension to the estate’s wines with abundantly ripe fruit, wild herbs and great length. Very quickly, Robert Parker wrote: “Santa Duc combines the muscle, richness and fire of a classic Gigondas with a degree of elegance and purity which are lacking in many wines of this appellation”. In 2005, the book “The greatest estates in the world”, by the same author, published by Simon & Chuster highlights the long history and the unique character of the Domaine’s wines. The cuvée “Les Hautes Garrigues”, from one of the best vineyards in the region, located on the Gigondas plateau, becomes an iconic wine. This wine reveals an immediately recognizable expression of the Garrigue terroir and a distinctive minerality drawn from clayey and incredibly stony soils. Yves Gras’ vision, as keen as that of the bird of prey from which the name of the estate was taken (the name “Santa Duc” refers to the Grand Duke owl who lives in the region) takes him ever further. Continuing his search for fresh terroirs suitable for the production of great wines, he acquired magnificent plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Crau area.
1994 . Yves Gras is embarking on a new project. It rehabilitates and enhances a forgotten Clos, magnificently located above the church and the hospices of the village of Gigondas: the Clos Derrière Vieille. For Benjamin, who takes over the reins of the estate, one thing is certain: if the soils and the exposure differ between this Clos en monopole and “Les Hautes Garrigues”, the philosophy remains, of course, the same. Massal selections, biodynamic cultivation, whole harvests, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, bottling without filtration …
This unique know-how, which is also found in the plots of Châteauneuf-du-Pape – La Crau Ouest, Les Saintes Vierges, Le Pied de Baud, Habemus Papam – allows Benjamin to reveal the fundamental characteristics of a great wine. : balance, elegance, purity and depth. Obviously for a family of winegrowers born at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, whose splendor and natural beauty are a daily source of creative inspiration.
The 2018 Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits features pungent notes of tapenade and licorice on the nose, backed by dark fruit flavors. Full-bodied and rich, it delivers a velvety mouthfeel that gradually fades to silk on the finish. Drink: 2020-2030

Subtle aromas of garrigue that surround the vinetard. Aromatic spices together with red and blackberry linger on the palate culminating in a fine mineral finish.
Our history begins in 1929 when my grand father decides to bottle and trade under the signature Pierre Amadieu his wine coming from the 7 hectares (17 acres) of vineyard in Gigondas passed on by generation to generation. He is then one of the firsts to print the name of the appellation on his bottles and obtains from 1932 a golden medal in the National Agricultural Concours of Paris.
We are presently at the head of the company. Pierre is in charge of the winemaking. He is working with his uncle Claude, who runs the vineyard, and with his three cousins : Henri-Claude manages the sales, Jean-Marie helps him for cellar management and vinification, and Marie is in charge of B to C sales and our wine shop. Together, we perpetuate the long-established family Amadieu spirit, respecting traditions and soils, in order to produce wines that reflect and embody our unique terroir. Our aim is to offer you wines that are faithful to my grandfather’s quality standards, adding a touch of modernity to delight the most discerning of palates.
We are not followers of over-extracted wines and often “heavy” to taste ; our ambition is rather to obtain well-balanced wines with a Burgundy fineness. Through the ageing we try to reveal all the elegance and richness of our protected terroirs located on the heights of the appellation Gigondas. From vines to the bottling patience and observation are required. Today appreciated all over the world, every vintage reserves its subtleties which we are happy to subject to your appreciation.
