Tasting Notes
The latest release of our flagship Aristea continues the theme of previous vintages – dark berry fruits, hints of new oak and firm tannins give the wine the weight and power to continue to develop in the bottle over the long term.
Our Story
Glenguin Vineyard was first planted in the 1980s and an average vine age now over 25 years with each wine coming from a small individual block on the property. Organic and biodynamic farming principles are followed at Glenguin where things are still done by hand from planting through vine training to pruning and handpicking at vintage.
The shiraz and semillon vines at Glenguin are directly descended from James Busby’s original planting at Kirkton in the 1820s. They are planted on their own roots on a unique combination of a raised gravel bench for shiraz with sandy loam over red basalt for Semillon.
The name Glenguin comes from the original Scots Gaelic name of the Highland distillery now called “Glengoyne” (since 1909). Robin Tedder, Australia’s 7th Master of Wine, is the third Baron of Glenguin and grandson of Arthur Tedder the First Baron Marshal of the RAF and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in WW2. Arthur was born on the distillery property in 1890 and the Tedder family continues the association with great drinks through the vineyards at Glenguin in Australia’s oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley.
Glenguin wines have won major Trophies including NSW and Boutique Wine Show Trophies for best white wine plus both Best Red and NSW Wine of the Year at the NSW Wine Awards for shiraz. Production is extremely limited with just a few hundred cases of each of our wines.

An exceptional vintage allowed the grapes to reach full ripeness, yielding just a touch under 2 tonnes per acre.
10 days fermenting on skins with 25% whole bunches before being aged in French oak (20% new) for 14 months.
Ripe red fruits make their presence known underneath immediate savoury layers. Soft tannins, decidedly medium-bodied, with great concentration and length.
Will age well over the medium term.

The wine is vivid purple in its youth with lifted aromas of red fruits- strawberry, raspberry, cherry and red current. The palate reflects the nose but also has savoury bramble berry and fresh mulberry notes. Touches of spicy star anise add extra interest and the tannins are soft and silky. The bright acidity gives a long, refreshing finish.
All the wines of Margan are single vineyard wines produced from grapes grown on the Margan vineyards in the Broke Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley. All of the wines of Margan are hand made by Andrew Margan in our 500 tonne winery in Broke.
Within our 100 hectares of vineyard we have a mixture of old vines planted in the late 1960’s to more traditional Hunter Valley varieties and some newer vineyards that we have planted ourselves to alternative varieties and field blends. The strongest element in defining the style of my wine is the climate of the Hunter Valley and the influence it has on the ripening of our grapes and the subsequent flavours, acidity and structure of the resultant wines. The second most significant element is the soil our vines are grown on. The ancient red volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill creates a unique style of wine that defines the wines of Margan.
From within our 100 hectares we have many different blocks of each variety which are picked separately and blended before bottling. In any given vintage some blocks may out perform others and stand out in the winery. It is from these small parcels we may select our White Label wines. Any wine that wears the White Label has been selected , apart from anything else, to age well.
