Featuring candied orange, rose petals and pickled ginger, this fleshy wine has a desirable earthiness that pulls you in. While the savoury notes dominant the mouthfeel, every now and then a pop of watermelon comes up and brings you to that taste of summer.

Another welcome return after a brief hiatus in 2020, the 2021 Balnarring was wild-fermented with a high portion of whole berries. Unlike the Merricks Pinot there is no whole-bunch influence here–Flanders explains that from this vineyard, the stems can easily dominate the fruit. The wine was matured in 300-litre hogsheads (roughly 25% new) and spent 10 months on lees before it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
As is the norm, there is a prettiness to this, as distinct from the Merricks which is darker and more savoury. The ’21 is textbook Balnarring Pinot yet also offers immediate drinking pleasure. Everything about this release is amplified–invigorating acidity, soft but plentiful tannins and a rich profusion of crunchy red fruits. It’s lean and sinewy, but this is counterbalanced by fleshy/pulpy fruit and a whisper of minerality on the lengthy finish. This will reward for years to come–if drinking now just give it a decant.
Anyone with even a passing interest in cool-climate Australia will already know that Garagiste is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars. Barnaby Flanders created the Garagiste label following his amicable split with Allies co-founder David Chapman (who continues with the Allies label). ‘Barney’ now focuses on a snug range of small-batch wines from fruit sourced from the highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, the Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring), and the Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Garagiste, the main label, is ably supported by delicious entry-level wines under the Le Stagiaire banner. Barnaby and Cam (Marshall) manage all aspects of the viticulture and winemaking themselves and a range of succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is what results. Garagiste isn’t a slave to fashion and doesn’t charge like a horde of agitated wildebeest. Hey-Diddly-Ho, as Mr Flanders’ cartoon namesake might utter.

Fruit is sourced from three vineyard sites in Tuerong, Merricks and Balnarring with an average vine age of 25 years. Intense and opulant aromas. This is an elegant Chardonnay that will improve as it opens up. Tropical peach, nectarine and citrus pith and complexity from its time on lees.

Made in a pure-fruited, medium bodied style that takes its inspiration from Burgundy rather than northern Italy or Alsace, this finely weighted Gris is drawn from a south-facing site in Merricks. The fruit was hand sorted in the vineyard and winery, then whole bunch pressed into to old barriques to ferment using indigenous yeasts. The wine only goes through partial malolactic, to preserve freshness and was matured on its lees in old neutral barrel for 6 months.
No fan of the nondescript, structure-free Gris style that abounds, Barney’s versions are well-defined and refreshing examples. Apple-tangy and creamy in the mouth, its charismatic flavours fall between the spiced apple/pear and stone fruit spectrum and the wine finishes with rippling citrus-laden dryness and notes of nutmeg and honey. Quality.

Whole bunches with wild ferment, three weeks on skins and further ageing in concrete, foudre and old barrels. Unfined and unfiltered, with plenty of savoury complexity to balance the ripe Pinot fruit.

The lion’s share (85%) of Barney’s 2021 rosé is Merricks Pinot Noir, and to this he added a portion of Tuerong Gewürztraminer. Everything was whole-bunch pressed to old barriques for a natural ferment with no temperature control on full solids. The blend spent seven months on lees before bottling.
The result is probably the most delicious, come-and-get-me textural rosé we have tasted under this label. Expect a wine with a beautiful onion skin colour and a pretty, spicy palate loaded with red fruit, rosewater and aniseed notes, and a crunchy, refreshing close. Delicious.
Garagiste premium Mornington Peninsula wines truly express a sense of the place where they were grown. Focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir we intend to highlight the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited wines.
