Made from Gamay vines that are now 50 years old and following lutte raisonnée principles, the Domaine Lathuilière Gravallon Fleurie Grand Pre displays sweet red Gamay fruit, but also an impressive finesse and body drawn from its pink granite soils. Pure and fresh, this Fleurie shows juicy cherry fruit combined with delicate but impressive structure.
Irvine Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a fruit bowl of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries backed by cedar spice, black pepper and a savory streak. The savoriness continues on the palate in the form of fine-grained tannins that hold all that plump fruit in place. A plush but balanced expression of the Eden Valley.
Warramate Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 A medium-bodied “classic” claret style featuring a succulent, fruit-layered palate integrated with earthy complexity & fine dusty tannins. Juicy acidity underscores well-weighted voluminous fruit & a deep, long finish, combining generosity & concentration with finesse rarely found at this price point.
Mr Barval Cabernet Merlot 2017 A restrained yet complex nose displaying a wonderful mix of cassis, black berry, currant, and plum, hints of spicey oak and a typically delicate Margaret River savoury dried kelp note. Medium to full bodied with plenty of acid to lift the palate and balance the autumn fruit bowl of dark and red berries and fruits. The youthful tannins are nutty, fine and dry and complete the well structured palate to perfection. This wine is already showing great depth and complexity in youth and I feel it has great potential to age and develop for at least 15 years.
Walsh & Sons Felix Syrah 2016. We have gone for a new take on an old Australian Classic … Syrah. Our wines are designed to have edgy bits because we think its these differences that define us. To that end it’s not fined or filtered. We choose family names from our younger generation because our hopes lie with them and it seems only right that wine with developing personalities have a name to match. This wine has green, white and black pepper characteristics.
The Octogenarian Grenache 2016 Ruby red in the glass with cranberry, plum, spice and vanillin oak aromas. On the palate, it’s a rich and full-bodied Grenache with juicy raspberry and plum core depth, savoury tannin foundation a crisp line of acidity and balanced oak.
Eldorado Road Quasimodo 2017.
To understand Quasimodo you must venture beyond the surface and explore the inner soul. As individual varietal wines they can struggle for love but when blended together they can sing, shine and bring harmony.
Quasimodo is a unique Australian blend of Nero d’Avola, Shiraz & Durif sourced from the regions of Eldorado and Rutherglen. It’s an amalgam of flavour and colour culminating in a complex rewarding wine.
Brought together from many different ferments with a goal of creating an affable blend built on the of layers flavours these three distinct varieties bring. Nero d’Avola is grown in our home vineyard and brings the vitality and bright red fruits. The Shiraz comes from a vineyard a short 5 minute drive down a dirt track from our winery perched amongst the boulders of a granite outcrop. This is a painfully low cropping vineyard resulting depth of flavour not attainable from higher yielding vineyards, this component fleshes out the mid palate. The final piece in the puzzle is Rutherglen Durif, dark and brooding the addition of just 15% gives the wine backbone and a subtle lick of tannin through the back palate without overpowering this medium bodied blend. Lightly filtered then bottled August 2017.
Maxwell Little Demon Cabernet Merlot 2018 Shows fresh fruit; plum, blackberry, and cherries. Well balanced tannin with subtle vanilla oak create a soft and round finish. The Cabernet flavours really dominate in this wine but the softness of the Merlot rounds off the palate creating a well-balanced wine.
Chateau Mont-Redon Chateauneuf du Pape 2016. Inky hue violet deep violet rim. Intense nose with red fruit aromas combined to complex smokiness. Palate with tight and focused tannins. Enjoyable now but require few years of bottle maturation to fully integrate aging notes. Very elegant and refined finish.
Tim Smith Bugalugs Shiraz 2020
Aromas of blue and black fruit, a hint of spice and a palate packed with flavour. Fresh acidity and some peppery, earthy characters through the finish.
Established in 2001, and with 33 years of hands on experience, Tim Smith Wines is a Barossa Valley-based producer of wines that we consider our region to excel at growing. We make only the wines we genuinely enjoy drinking ourselves (sorry, Rosé drinkers).
We are unashamedly influenced by the great producers of both the North and South Rhone Valley in France, but have a New World understanding of the techniques that we believe work best in our region.
This understanding comes as a result of working as a winemaker with some of our regions most respected wineries, and numerous overseas vintages in a number of countries; always watching, always learning, and always challenging even our own winemaking approach.
Our wines are at once rich, polished, and structured for longevity, but with a brightness of fruit that invites early drinking.
Tim Smith Wines was established concurrent to a 20+ year winemaking career working for some of the best Barossa Valley based wine producers, as well as numerous overseas vintages in France, Portugal, and New Zealand. These producers include in the Barossa; Yalumba, St Hallett, Charles Melton, Chateau Tanunda. In McLaren Vale; Tatachilla. In France; Chapoutier, Gabriel Meffre and Domaine du Mandeville. In Portugal: Cortes de Cima and Azamor. In New Zealand; Nautilus.
Born in a ‘light bulb moment’ on a study tour to France’s Rhone Valley, Tim Smith Wines was established in 2001 with our first vintage in 2002.
We are still unashamedly heavily influenced by the wines of the Rhone Valley, but with a very healthy respect for our regional Barossa wine style. We see no point in trying to reinvent the wheel when the wine styles and regionality we enjoy in the Barossa has been around for nearly 180 years; the region must be doing something right. However-the wine geek in me cant help tinkering and responding to our different yearly vintage challenges.
Just as importantly-we want to try and demystify a lot of the elitism about wine: it’s a social lubricant after all; it should be fun..
Il Gobbo Nero Syrah Toscana 2011
Il Gobbo Nero is our single-variety syrah, produced from the selection of the best syrah grapes of our vineyard. The vinification takes place in concrete tanks, then the wine rests for 12 months in French oak barriques. The wine spends 12 months of refinement in the bottle, before being sold. The wine has a deep ruby red colour, and at the nose it pleasantly surprises with notes of pepper, cinnamon, berries such as currant, blueberry and a cherry base. Compelling in the mouth, with fine and flaunt tannins, structured body, well balanced, with a fresh note calibrated. The finish is inviting and complex.
