In the glass, the 2013 Equinoxe Crozes Hermitage has a bright ruby robe. There are pronounced aromas of black fruit fresh, violet, minerals and smoked peppery spice, with a hint of bacon smoked in retro-olfaction. The wine is juicy, penetrating and well-focused, offering dynamic flavors of blackberry and bitter cherry increase with aeration. This culminates in a spicy wine finale, concentrated and persistent, supported by refined tannins.
Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Syrah 2019-Aromas of juicy black cherries and boysenberries with a grind of black pepper. The palate possesses a fine grained texture comprising of ripe tannin which adds to the structure and depth of the wine.
Chateau Les Grands Marecheaux 2015
Château Massereau, situated at Barsac at about 30 kilometers from Bordeaux, was built in the 16th century and acquired by the Chaigneau family in 2000. The estate extends over 19 hectares, 10 planted (6 600 – 7 000 plants/hectare) in the Barsac, Graves and Bordeaux Superieur appellations.
Jean-François, who chose by passion to become a wine-maker, and Philippe, his brother, sales manager, have taken on a real challenge. Quality and authenticity are the key-words of the estate to give birth to fine, natural, authentic artisan wines.
Extreme vine-growing and wine-making methods, with respect of the terroir, of the vines, of the grapes on the 3 terroirs of Barsac, Graves and Bordeaux Superieur : ploughing (sometimes with horses) (no chemical weeding), disbudding, thinning out of leaves, selection of bunches as well as the harvest are manual and regarding the grapes of Barsac, they are pressed in an old wood press operated manually.
No chaptalisation, no acidification, no filtration, no fining, no wine-making additives, use of a very small quantity of SO² (total SO² from 10 to 35 mg/l), no manipulation, in order to offer natural wines and allow the terroirs to express their typical qualities.
Walsh & Sons Felix Syrah 2016. We have gone for a new take on an old Australian Classic … Syrah. Our wines are designed to have edgy bits because we think its these differences that define us. To that end it’s not fined or filtered. We choose family names from our younger generation because our hopes lie with them and it seems only right that wine with developing personalities have a name to match. This wine has green, white and black pepper characteristics.
Padrillos Malbec 2018. The Padrillos Malbec from Ernesto Catena shows lovely aromas of violets with dark fruits that fill the nose. The palate is soft, as toasty oak wraps around dark fruits with a hint of chocolate.
Minnow Creek The Black Minnow Sangiovese Cabernet 2018 Showing a generous entry of bright red fruits leading to an intense burst of deep vibrant dark cherry fruits with a touch of typical savouriness from the Sangiovese. The mid palate shows a rich complexity of red and black fruits derived from the Cabernet component. The back palate combines an intense array of vibrant complex berry flavours and allspice finishing with a delightful fine tannin structure of great length.
Tim Smith Bugalugs Shiraz 2020
Aromas of blue and black fruit, a hint of spice and a palate packed with flavour. Fresh acidity and some peppery, earthy characters through the finish.
Established in 2001, and with 33 years of hands on experience, Tim Smith Wines is a Barossa Valley-based producer of wines that we consider our region to excel at growing. We make only the wines we genuinely enjoy drinking ourselves (sorry, Rosé drinkers).
We are unashamedly influenced by the great producers of both the North and South Rhone Valley in France, but have a New World understanding of the techniques that we believe work best in our region.
This understanding comes as a result of working as a winemaker with some of our regions most respected wineries, and numerous overseas vintages in a number of countries; always watching, always learning, and always challenging even our own winemaking approach.
Our wines are at once rich, polished, and structured for longevity, but with a brightness of fruit that invites early drinking.
Tim Smith Wines was established concurrent to a 20+ year winemaking career working for some of the best Barossa Valley based wine producers, as well as numerous overseas vintages in France, Portugal, and New Zealand. These producers include in the Barossa; Yalumba, St Hallett, Charles Melton, Chateau Tanunda. In McLaren Vale; Tatachilla. In France; Chapoutier, Gabriel Meffre and Domaine du Mandeville. In Portugal: Cortes de Cima and Azamor. In New Zealand; Nautilus.
Born in a ‘light bulb moment’ on a study tour to France’s Rhone Valley, Tim Smith Wines was established in 2001 with our first vintage in 2002.
We are still unashamedly heavily influenced by the wines of the Rhone Valley, but with a very healthy respect for our regional Barossa wine style. We see no point in trying to reinvent the wheel when the wine styles and regionality we enjoy in the Barossa has been around for nearly 180 years; the region must be doing something right. However-the wine geek in me cant help tinkering and responding to our different yearly vintage challenges.
Just as importantly-we want to try and demystify a lot of the elitism about wine: it’s a social lubricant after all; it should be fun..
Craiglee Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. A sensational, medium-bodied cabernet sauvignon loaded with fragrant red and ripe blackberry fruits. It builds with savoury, cedary notes, supple velvety tannins and subtle oak that brings this wine together beautifully and to a long finish. Top stuff. All Craiglee wines are made from estate grown fruit, handpicked from vines that are hand pruned and carefully tended here on our family farm.
Flametree SRS Wallcliffe Syrah 2018
This unashamedly medium bodied Syrah styled Shiraz shows lovely lifted spice, clove, orange peel, liquorice, plum, blackberry and earthy notes. The palate displays a wonderful core of elegant blue/black fruits, spice and fine tannins. The lifted fruits are supported by a nice core of oak and stalk tannin.
Hand picked fruit was refrigerated overnight before being carefully destemmed in order to retain whole berries. This fruit was conveyed into bins and again refrigerated whilst the stems were washed and dried in the sun for 5 days. The dried stems were placed in an open fermenter and the whole berry fruit was then poured over the stalks. The must was soaked for about 4 days before the wild ferment kicked in. Once the ferment was active we started to plunge and foot stomp the whole fruit and dried stems. After ferment was complete we pressed the skins and transferred the wine into 15% new French oak puncheons for 16 months maturation.
Maxwell Little Demon Cabernet Merlot 2018 Shows fresh fruit; plum, blackberry, and cherries. Well balanced tannin with subtle vanilla oak create a soft and round finish. The Cabernet flavours really dominate in this wine but the softness of the Merlot rounds off the palate creating a well-balanced wine.
The Octogenarian Grenache 2016 Ruby red in the glass with cranberry, plum, spice and vanillin oak aromas. On the palate, it’s a rich and full-bodied Grenache with juicy raspberry and plum core depth, savoury tannin foundation a crisp line of acidity and balanced oak.
Johann Michel Cornas 2016 – Whiffs of truffle, leather and violet introduce this deft, nuanced Syrah. Blackberry and plum flavors are intensely ripe but muted by savory notes of spice and earth. Freshly balanced and supple on the palate, it finishes with a firm, penetrating grip of tannins. Lovely already it should soften and meld from 2021 and continue to improve through 2030. ANNA LEE C.
