Howard Park Allingham Chardonnay 2019 is deeply and intensely aromatic, full of classic Chardonnay notes – citrus, fig, honeysuckle, fuzzy peach, nougat, brioche, vanilla pod and wet stone all melding and releasing. Predictably, the palate is a world of layers, flavours and textures. Pliable and full of stone fruits, citrus, pear drop essence, nutmeal, and lemon curd. A soft chalk like texture and gentle acidity allows the flavours to build and linger. Never a wine a extremes, the Alligham Chardonnay is always nuanced and full of subtleties, surprise and harmony.
Howard Park Allingham Chardonnay 2019
The Allingham vineyard is located in the Margaret River sub region of Karridale, a southerly area of the Margaret River wine region, where a slightly cooler climate produces Chardonnay with a delicate elegance. The Allingham vineyard was planted in 2004, with significant Chardonnay blocks established up over time – the cool climate Dijon clones 95 & 96 give a concentration to our wines, while the Mendoza – or Gin Gin clone that Margaret River is famous for – imparts a complexity, texture & citrus flavour.
Small blocks of Shiraz & Sauvignon Blanc were also planted here, & a tree farm of Blue Gum Eucalypts provides the wood chips for our intensive compost program.
The Burch family purchased the Allingham vineyard in 2014, after a long history of using its fruit in Howard Park’s top Chardonnays. The bulk of these grapes now contribute to Allingham’s namesake Icon Chardonnay. This wine was first crafted in 2011 after the arrival of our chief winemaker Janice McDonald. The Burch family tasked Janice with creating a flagship Chardonnay to sit as an equal alongside the existing Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon. She was given free reign with no expense spared.
The resulting wine, (a Chardonnay in the style that Janice had always wanted to make, and now had the resources to do so) was enough to convince Jeff Burch to purchase the Allingham vineyard to secure its precious fruit.
The property is 48.25 hectares, with 30 hectares under vine – 24 of which is Chardonnay. During its establishment, large areas of the Blue Gum eucalypt plantation were torn down to make way for vine blocks. However, with this we were able to spearhead a cutting-edge composting program of turning that waste into nutrient rich organic matter to then fertilise the soils.
Like the Abercrombie vineyard, the Allingham is the namesake of an influential family figure in Jeff Burch’s life. Muriel Allingham was his maternal grandmother, quite alternative for her time, who took young Jeff to art galleries, museums, restaurants, botanic gardens and even the Beatles at the Adelaide Hall in 1964.
