Moondarra Studebaker Pinot Noir 2021

I sold my 1957 Studebaker President to buy the fenceposts for our first vineyard at Moondarra. Our Studebaker Pinot Noir is the most accessible of the three Pinot Noir wines we produce. The fruit is completely crushed and destemmed before fermentation.

When drained to oak we use 500-litre puncheons rather than 225-liter Burgundy barriques. Mostly Remond Alier and low-toast, MTL. These larger vessels offer a fabulous way for the wine to interact with the yeast lees without adding oak tannin, rather relying on fruit tannin to give structure to the wine. When tipsy I can sing you a love song about my old car, a modern masterpiece in design by Raymond Lowey!

Description

Moondarra Studebaker Pinot Noir 2021

Neil Prentice needs little introduction to those involved in the Australian wine industry for any length of time. He has certainly been a name since our sommelier days some 25+ years ago. In 1991 Neil, a self described “wine waiter” (before the role of Sommelier was even recognised in Australia), sold his beloved 1957 Studebaker to raise money to help plant a small vineyard on his parents’ property in Gippsland. Since then he has crafted complex ‘old school’ inspired reds from Pinot Noir and a little Nebbiolo, as well as whites from rare Italian varietals Ribolla Giallo and Friulano blended with Pinot Grigio. Of course, Pet Nat has now joined the range.
